October 2024 General Conference

Talk Summaries from the October 2024 Sunday Morning Session

President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency emphasized the importance of teaching the simplicity of the doctrine of Jesus Christ during general conference Sunday morning, October 6.

“We must avoid speculation or personal interpretation that goes beyond teaching true doctrine,” President Eyring said at the close of the Sunday morning session of the October 2024 general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He testified that teaching the doctrine of Christ — faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost and enduring to the end — is sacred work, and the Holy Ghost will testify of these truths.

“I bear witness of the sacred work of teaching Heavenly Father’s children the simple doctrine of Jesus Christ, which allows us to be spiritually cleansed and ultimately be welcomed into God’s presence, to live with Him and His Son in glory forever,” President Eyring said.

President Jeffrey R. Holland, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, also taught about the fundamental “principles and ordinances” characterized by Christ’s church.

“Faith, repentance, baptism by immersion at the hands of one who has the authority from God to do so, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost as part of one’s confirmation into the Church, and receiving our sacred blessings in the House of the Lord — these are the fundamental ‘principles and ordinances’ that ultimately characterize our love of God and neighbor and characterize the true Church of Christ.”

Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles talked about “unprecedented opportunities to serve, to unite with members and friends, and to introduce The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to more people than ever before” in the coming decade.

Upcoming opportunities include an unprecedented number of temple open houses and dedications, the bicentennial of the Church’s organization in 2030 and the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Other speakers in the session were Bishop L. Todd Budge, Second Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric; Elder Brook P. Hales, General Authority Seventy; Brother Bradley R. Wilcox, First Counselor in the Young Men General Presidency; and Sister Tracy Y. Browning, Second Counselor in the Primary General Presidency.

President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency conducted the session in the near-capacity Conference Center.

Prayers were given by Elder Jonathan S. Schmitt, General Authority Seventy and Brother Chad H Webb, First Counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency.

Music was provided by The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, directed by Mack Wilberg, with Andrew Unsworth and Richard Elliott at the organ. One of the choir’s selections was “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” (no. 1014) from the Church new global hymnbook “Hymns—For Home and Church
