In Your Own Words (Blog Feature)
Beliefs & Practices — October 28, 2014
In Your Own Words is a regular sampling of online articles, blog posts and social media that represent some of the current conversations about Mormonism. The posts in this series do not necessarily represent the views of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, nor are they meant to be a comprehensive summary of the online conversations about the Church. The intent is to highlight social media content from individuals that will help journalists and the public better understand Mormonism.
Reactions to Sacred Temple Clothing Video
MormonNewsroom.org released a YouTube video last week that helped explain sacred temple clothing and temple garments, sometimes inaccurately referred to as “Mormon underwear.” The video was viewed and shared by hundreds of thousands of people online. Here are a few of the comments:
#MormonHelpingHands Serve Communities Around Globe
In addition to helping out after natural disasters and other emergencies, the Church’s Mormon Helping Hands program brings people together to help improve the communities where they live.
People who participate in service projects often use the hashtag #MormonHelpingHands when sharing photos on social media. The posts reflect the desire of Mormons to follow the example of Jesus Christ by serving others.
“One of the highlights of my day was seeing this dad (I don’t know him) moving rock with one kid at his feet, one kid on his back. Ideal circumstances for doing physical service? Some may think… not so much. But clearly this is a man who prioritized teaching his kids in their youth, that service is a part of a happy life. Awesome in every way. #TeachingByExample #ShareGoodness #MormonHelpingHands” @beckyhigginsllc

New Mormon Messages Video Takes on Difficult Topic
A new Mormon Message about depression and suicide prevention was released last week and is being circulated among various social media channels. The video quotes Elder M. Russell Ballard, who said, “There is nothing more powerful than the arm of love that can be put around those who are struggling.”
