California Honors Latter-day Saint Volunteers for Special Olympics Efforts

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Southern California have been honored by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. for helping to host the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles in July and August of 2015.

The California Governor’s Volunteering Service Awards were handed out April 7, 2016, in the state capitol in Sacramento. A total of seven organizations and one individual were honored for making a positive impact in the state’s communities. “The men and women we recognize today are California heroes,” said Governor Brown. “Their generosity and dedication are a real inspiration.

The 10,000 Mormon volunteers from throughout Southern California worked behind the scenes to house, shuttle, feed and cheer on the athletes in a multitude of sports such as aquatics, basketball, volleyball, golf, powerlifting and gymnastics.
