Church Supports Early Childhood Development in Mexico

Through a donation made on June 27, 2025, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints collaborated with non-governmental organization, Un Kilo de Ayuda, to strengthen early child development in more than 500 marginalized communities in Mexico.

This project will address the needs of children under five years old and pregnant women who face malnutrition, lack neurocognitive stimulation and to support parenting practices. If not addressed, in time, these conditions can have irreversible consequences on the physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development of children, perpetuating cycles of poverty. As a result of this project, more than 44,000 children from vulnerable communities in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Mexico, Sinaloa, Nuevo León, Guerrero and Yucatan will be helped.

The initiative includes the following actions:

  • Monthly delivery of 3,600 protein-rich nutritional packages
  • Iron supplementation to fight anemia
  • Periodic evaluations of child development
  • Training for caregivers in positive parenting practices
  • Installation of play spaces to promote physical and cognitive development
  • Improvement of access to safe water

The initiatives will be implemented through 10 Early Child Development Centers, with community visits every three weeks. The entire process will be monitored through InfoKILO, a digital platform of Un Kilo de Ayuda, which allows epidemiological monitoring and continuous improvement of the program.

With a history of nearly four decades, more than 500,000 children and 450,000 caregivers from across the country have benefited from Un Kilo Ayuda.

Through experience and collaboration with international agencies, local governments and charitable organizations such as the Church of Jesus Christ, Un Kilo de Ayuda has demonstrated the ability to generate measurable results, such as the significant reduction of child malnutrition.

The Church of Jesus Christ has previously worked with Un Kilo de Ayuda on successful projects in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Mexico, as well as emergency responses such as Hurricane Otis, and the “Light the World” campaign.

Jared Pulido, president of the Monte Alban Stake of the Church said, “We share the vision of Un Kilo de Ayuda to help all children have integral development, so in addition to the delivery of nutritional packages, infants’ progress will be tracked and their parents and caregivers trained.”

Daniela Landaverde, Deputy Director of Institutional Relations at Un Kilo de Ayuda, said, “This alliance with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints represents much more than collaboration: It is a shared commitment to transform the life of a child during their first thousand days. Thanks to this joint work, we have trained thousands of caregivers and evaluated the development of more than 7,000 children. In 2025, we renewed our commitment to continue measuring, improving and building the future.”
