Conference Highlights

President Dallin H. Oaks opened the Saturday morning session on October 4 with a brief tribute to President Russell M. Nelson, who died on September 27:

“I love President Russell M. Nelson and have learned more about the gospel and gospel leadership from my long friendship and association with him than from any other leader I have personally known. He is our model as a servant and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

At the concluding session on Sunday, October 5, President Oaks said families and temples are essential in the Church.

“The ordinances received [in temples] enable us to return as eternal families to the presence of our Heavenly Father,” he said.

President Oaks said the Church will “move forward in providing the ordinances of the temple to members of the Church throughout the world, including when and where to announce the construction of new temples.”

Thirty years after “The Family Proclamation,” President Oaks also emphasized that “the family is central to the Creator’s plan.”

“We are a family Church,” he said.

“Our relationship to God and the purpose of our mortal life are explained in terms of the family. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the plan of our Heavenly Father for the benefit of His spirit children,” he said.

During the five sessions of general conference, speakers comprised of General Authorities and General Officers of the Church talked about belonging, being needed in the Lord’s Church and seeing oneself in the family of God. Healing, repentance and reconciliation with God, ministering to others, and finding peace amid turmoil were other repeated themes.
