All rights reserved. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has added a new Sunday School class for new Church members and friends.
Gospel Foundations: A Sunday School Class for New Members and Friends is intended to help class members establish lifelong discipleship habits, develop a stronger sense of belonging and become more fully integrated with their congregation. Individuals returning to Church activity are also welcome to attend.
This optional class for adults is held during the 25-minute Sunday School portion of the new meeting schedule that began on September 6. Class members are encouraged to then attend Elders Quorum or Relief Society for the final 25-minute class period.
Gospel Foundations may be implemented at the ward council’s discretion. The class’s workshop format helps provide sufficient time for both learning and experiences that support discipleship.
The manual and class instructions are available in 54 languages in Gospel Library in the “Books and Lessons” collection under “Gospel Foundations: For New Members.”
Participation in the Gospel Foundations class depends on a class member’s individual needs. After attending Gospel Foundations for two to four months, new members are encouraged to join a regular “Come, Follow Me” Sunday School class with the rest of the ward.
According to a notice about the class sent to local leaders, “As ward leaders determine whom to call to teach the Gospel Foundations class, they should consider someone who will help new members and friends feel welcome in the ward, who can teach basic gospel principles clearly, and who will help new members and friends progress as followers of the Savior.”
