Recent updates to the Gospel Library app of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints include several new music features that make it easier to find music, create playlists, customize listening experiences, and access tools that support congregational singing.

These Gospel Library feature updates are meant to help members discover sacred music and participate more fully and joyfully in worship.

Featured Playlists

Featured playlists are now included in the Playlist section, which can be found from the app’s Home screen. These playlists are published by the Church based on global interests and needs.

Topic-Based Search

Users can now create or add songs to personal playlists by easily searching gospel topics. To see the list of available topics, click on the library symbol at the bottom of the screen (indicated in red in the image below), then select Topics in the upper-right corner.

Easier Audio Type Selection

When selecting a song to listen to, users will be prompted to choose between the available audio types, such as the accompaniment only, guitar accompaniment or vocal recordings, which are available for all new music from “Hymns for Home and Church.” Previously, the music player would default to the vocal recordings. See the Audio Type prompt marked in red in the image below.

Hymn Board for Stake Conference

The sacrament meeting hymn board feature is now available for stake conference. See image below. Stake music coordinators, stake executive secretaries and clerks, and stake presidency members can program hymns in advance to help members more easily worship together for stake conference Saturday evening and general sessions, when there may not be enough hymnbooks for all in attendance. To use this feature, users need to be signed into the app using their Church account.

Metronome Tool

In accompanist mode, a metronome tool can now help accompanists and music leaders keep music at a joyful tempo. Reference the tempo range at the top of the sheet music, then choose the tempo that matches the setting. The tempo can be set as visible or audible beats. See icons marked in red in the images below.

Accompanists and music leaders can use this tool to carry out a recent invitation from Elder Patrick Kearon related to the music in sacrament meeting: “Let us have a tempo that encourages us to sing energetically” (“The Sabbath and Sacrament Meeting, Featuring Elder David A. Bednar and Elder Patrick Kearon”).

Guitar Chord Notation

With the publication of the new “Hymns for Home and Church,” guitar chord notation has been provided for all new hymns. Because chord notation can appear large and distracting for members while they are singing, it will now be turned off by default in the responsive sheet music view for all users. Guitar players can turn chord notation back on in the Display Options menu. See the prompt in the image below.

These Gospel Library updates are part of ongoing efforts to help members incorporate sacred music into daily worship, gospel learning, family activities, youth gatherings and Church meetings. Whether listening to a featured playlist, playing a hymn recording, preparing music for stake conference, or accompanying a congregation, members of the Church now have more tools to engage with sacred music through Gospel Library.

Users can find more information on Gospel Library app features in the Help section (tap on the icon or user photo in the upper-right corner and tap “Help”) or the “Tip of the Week” on the Home screen.
