A new section of LDS.org has been launched by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help Mormons learn about religious freedom and know what they can do to protect it. Church leaders encourage members to use the new online resources to be better informed as they engage in public dialogue on the issue.
During the past several years, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and other senior leaders have spoken frequently about the importance of protecting religious freedom around the world.
“As members of the Savior’s Church, we must learn not to be drawn into contentious arguments with those whose views differ from ours, but rather seek to understand them. Be civil as we talk with them, and yet be courageous enough to express and defend our views,” said Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in a video introduction on the website.
Religious freedom is a fundamental human right and the first among rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution. Some of the new online content is specific to the U.S., but the principles can be applied in other settings.
The online content includes videos, articles, talks from Church leaders, inspirational quotes and other resources.
“As you go about, be kind and patient and seek strength in the scriptures and in your covenants to be like the Savior,” cautioned Elder Christofferson. “Remember, you are seen as representing His Church and therefore must do your best to act as He would. Recognize that all people are children of our Heavenly Father and most are reasonable and good, seeking truth and happiness.”
