About the Event

Now in its 23rd year, Luz de las Naciones features a cast of 1,000 volunteer musical artists wearing traditional clothing and performing music and dances from countries like Puerto Rico, Bolivia, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Brazil and Argentina, showcasing the cultural and spiritual richness of the performers’ heritage.

“‘Luz de las Naciones’ is intended to spiritually lift our friends in the Latino community through music, dance and inspired messages,” said Elder Jorge T. Becerra, General Authority Seventy and Second Counselor in the Utah Area Presidency. “This year, the theme ‘Peace that Shines’ will bring a large measure of the Savior’s peace that is needed in these days of trouble and strife. Our hope is to help the Latino community find a greater measure of peace that comes through Jesus Christ as we help them increase their faith in Him.

“We invite all who participate in this year’s event, both audience and the large number of volunteers, to feel once again the peace that surpasses understanding.

“This event is not just a concert or a cultural performance; it is a living testimony of the faith, diversity and brotherhood we share as children of God,” said director Israel González-Nieri. “Not only will participants connect with their cultures through music and dance, but we also want them to feel that peace — the peace, that internal peace that only comes through the gospel of Jesus Christ. He’s the light of the nations. He’s the light of the world.”

Marietha Lázaro, a member of the Luz de las Naciones choir, said participating in the production each year has been a blessing in her life. “I’ve been participating in Luz de las Naciones for 20 years,” she said. “Luz de las Naciones is part of my life.”

This year’s celebration carries even more significance, as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is commemorating the centennial of the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ in South America.

“We’re celebrating 100 years of the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ in South America,” said Jason C. Jensen, Area Seventy. “The good that has come from that — the millions of people that have been blessed by the gospel of Jesus Christ in South America — has just been a great blessing and a miracle.”

“One hundred years of history, service and growth have transformed communities and blessed the lives of millions,” said González-Nieri. “For me, this anniversary is not only a remembrance of what we have received but also an invitation to continue sharing the light of Christ that brings peace and hope to the world.”

“The title of the show is ‘Peace that Shines,’” said Sister Andrea Spannaus, Young Women General Presidency. “We need peace, and we can find peace in Jesus Christ.”
