Every six months, tens of thousands of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a global faith with more than 16 million members in 196 nations and territories, gather at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Millions more tune in via the internet, television and radio to watch and listen to general conference, but this past year was a little different. Due to COVID-19, the First Presidency announced that general conference would be virtual in 2020.
In a letter sent to Church membership in June 2020 the First Presidency said, “Because of our concern for the health and safety of others, we have decided that the October 2020 general conference will follow the same pattern as the conference held in April of this year. The general sessions will be broadcast as usual. However, the general sessions will not be open to the public.” Speakers include the general authorities and general officers of the Church, who prayerfully seek inspiration to know God’s will before addressing the worldwide congregation.
