The following script may be used by journalists in reporting on the Church's delivery of emergency supplies to the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Suggested Lead:

SINCE A POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI HIT NORTHERN JAPAN, THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS HAS BEEN AMONG ORGANIZATIONS GETTING DESPERATELY NEEDED HUMANITARIAN AID TO THE JAPANESE PEOPLE IN AREAS WHERE SUFFERING IS THE GREATEST.

(VO)

LIKE THOUSANDS IN THEIR COMMUNITY… THE ONUMA FAMILY HAS ENDURED A CATASTROPHIC QUAKE AND TSUMANI THAT LEFT THEIR HOME AND LIVES---IN SHAMBLES.

(SOT)

((Mitsuko Onuma/Church member Volunteer))

We haven’t been able to get our house in order yet. We’re all pretty tired but everyone is staying cheerful and our hearts are happy.

BEFORE SEEING TO THEIR NEEDS… THE ONUMAS HAD A GREATER DESIRE--- TO HELP OTHERS IN THEIR COMMUNITY.

THEY’VE JOINED WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS TO DELIVER SOME 70 TONS OF HUMANITARIAN SUPPLIES PROVIDED BY THE CHURCH.

(NAT PAUSE)

SUCH AS FOOD AND WATER… CLOTHING…  AND WARM BLANKETS TO RELIEVE THE SUFFERING FROM THE EFFECTS OF THE DEVASTATION.

(SOT)

SOT: ((Mitsuko Onuma/Church member Volunteer))

The relief shelter was really cold and people didn’t have anything to keep them warm, so blankets would really help keep them warm.

THE CHURCH HAS A LONG HISTORY OF RESPONDING TO DISASTERS AND THOSE IN NEED ALL OVER THE WORLD.

THE ONUMA FAMILY IS AMONG THOUSANDS OF JAPANESE LATTER-DAY SAINTS WHO’VE ALREADY SERVED OVER 40-THOUSAND HOURS TO BRING RELIEF TO THEIR NEIGHBORS.

(SOT)

((Elder Gary E. Stevenson/Asia North Area President

This is such an efficient and direct way to provide help immediately to areas on a local basis that get to the people that need the help most urgently and this has been a wonderful resource that we’ve been able to witness.

THE 15-THOUSAND BLANKETS WERE PROVIDED BY ICON FITNESS…  A UTAH-BASED COMPANY…  AND DISTRIBUTED THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE CHURCH’S HUMANITARIAN SERVICES.

(ALTERNATIVE TRACK)

THE BLANKETS WERE PROVIDED BY A UTAH-BASED COMPANY AND DISTRIBUTED THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE CHURCH’S HUMANITARIAN SERVICES.

THE BULK OF THE BLANKETS AND SUPPLIES… WERE DELIVERED TO EVACUATION SHELTERS THAT MORE THAN 180-THOUSAND JAPANESE PEOPLE ARE NOW CALLING HOME.

SOT: ((Elder Gary E Stevenson/Asia North Area President))

All of these supplies are going to both members and those in these evacuation centers and other places in these devastated locals to provide assistance for them.

(NAT BREAK)

THE ASANOS WERE ONE OF THE FIRST FAMILIES TO RECEIVE URGENTLY NEEDED AID BY THE CHURCH AFTER THE TSUNAMI SWALLOWED UP THEIR TOWN… THEIR HOME…  AND BELONGINGS.

(SOT)

((Hiroyuki Asano/Received Supplies))

More than pain and suffering, all I feel is gratitude

HIROYUKI SAYS THE HELP HAS GIVEN COMFORT AND A MORE OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK TO HER FAMILY AFTER A VERY TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE.

(SOT)

((Hiroyuki Asano/Received Supplies))

I feel, even though there has been a disaster here, I can be happy each day.

A SUBSTANTIAL DONATION HAS ALSO BEEN GIVEN TO THE JAPANESE RED CROSS AND MORE HUMANITARIAN AID IS SLATED FOR DELIVERY IN THE COMING WEEKS.

THE CHURCH HAS ALSO PROVIDED 10-THOUSAND LITERS OF FUEL… WHICH IS IN GREAT DEMAND... AND VOLUNTEER MEMBERS ARE DELIVERING AID BY SCOOTERS PROVIDED BY THE CHURCH TO AREAS TOO DIFFICULT TO REACH BY CAR.
