Temple Square Renovation Update: June 2026

Salt Lake Temple is officially prepared for seismic activity following base isolator plate removal

After two decades of planning and more than six years of construction, the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints now rests on its new base isolation system.

“The system is unlike anywhere else in the world,” said Nathan Espinoza, assistant project manager with Jacobsen Construction.

Beginning Thursday, June 25, 2026, crews removed more than 1,500 bolts connecting 392 plates to the base isolators. The plates kept the 98 base isolators, located 20 feet below the temple, stabilized during installation and the weight transfer.

“This is a milestone moment for this whole project,” said Brad Bohne, general superintendent with Jacobsen Construction.

“The temple is set free,” Bohne continued. “Free to move now during an earthquake, so a big deal for us.”

Temple Doors Reinstalled

The historic oak doors on the east side of the Salt Lake Temple were reinstalled June 23–25. The west doors were returned in early June.

“This really serves as that key milestone that this temple is going to be completed; we’re going to have it open and then rededicated,” said Richard Sutton, senior director in the Temple Department over the Salt Lake Temple Celebration. “And the Salt Lake Temple will be back in operation for worship of Jesus Christ.”

Other Construction Updates

Work is underway on the stone paving immediately outside the temple, on top of snowmelt tubing, which will help the grounds in the winter months.

Beautiful chandeliers now adorn the east baptismal font and other hallways and rooms inside the temple.
