Temple Square Renovation Update: May 2025

Salt Lake Temple’s seismic upgrade nears completion while interior work progresses

The renovation of the historic Salt Lake Temple continues to reach new milestones.

Strengthening Structure With Vertical Cables

One of the most significant achievements is the tensioning of vertical strands inside columns that now extend from the tops of the temple’s northeast towers down through the newly built foundations. These cables, when tensioned, will compress the tower and wall stones of the temple to further reinforce them. This work marks the final phase of the temple’s seismic upgrade — the largest part of the renovation.

North Addition, Sealing Wing and the Celestial Room

Work on the north addition is also moving forward. This includes detailed stonework to finish the planters on the top level. In the sealing wing, large stones are being carefully placed. Some of these resemble cornerstones, symbolizing the sacred ordinances performed in these rooms where families are joined for eternity.

Sealing rooms are receiving their finishing touches with elegant doors and chandeliers. Skilled artisans are working to cut and shape the doors to fit perfectly.

Progress continues in the celestial room, where artists are working on the intricate ceiling. The goal is to ensure that the beautiful elements of the historic temple are preserved.

Two Baptismal Fonts Near Completion With Restored and New Oxen in Place

Work is moving forward on both the east and west baptismal fonts.

At the east font, the original cast-iron oxen are in place. These oxen weigh 2,200 pounds each and are original to the temple. They were meticulously restored during the renovation.

The west font features new fiberglass oxen, which have already been installed. This ensures that the font will be both functional and beautiful.

The twelve oxen sculptures supporting both fonts symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel, representing the strength and power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Both fonts are now in the finishing stages, with tile work underway.

Varnish Removal

Careful attention is being given to every detail, including the circular stairways within the temple’s corner towers. Skilled crews are meticulously removing old varnish from the intricate paneling using advanced laser technology. This precise method ensures the delicate woodwork is preserved without damage, allowing for efficient and targeted restoration while protecting the surrounding historic elements.

Temple Grounds

Extensive landscaping work continues outside the temple, especially on the south side. The grounds are being transformed with an emphasis on water conservation, incorporating more water-efficient plants in the flower beds and a 30% increase in trees. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to environmental stewardship across all Church-owned properties.

These beautiful grounds, long a cherished gathering place, will once again welcome visitors from around the globe during the upcoming Salt Lake Temple open house celebration, beginning in April 2027.

Latter-day Saints worship in temples for several reasons: to feel God’s love and peace, to learn more about God’s plan for His children and the gospel of Jesus Christ, to make promises with God and with one’s husband or wife, and to unite families in this life and the next through sacred ordinances.
