Thousands of Latter-day Saint Volunteers Turn Out to Help Victims of Sandy Over Thanksgiving Weekend

Latter-day Saint volunteers from dozens of congregations spent Thanksgiving weekend helping families in New York and New Jersey neighborhoods impacted by Hurricane Sandy. More than 6,500 Mormons answered the call to serve their communities by cleaning out flood-damaged homes and treating them against mold.

To date, more than 21,000 Mormon volunteers have provided nearly 197,000 hours of service. Volunteers included missionaries and Church members from communities on the East Coast and as far away as Idaho and Utah.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has provided around 400,000 pounds of relief supplies so far, including food, water, blankets, hygiene kits, generators, pumps, tarps, cleaning supplies and fuel.

Local Church leaders continue to partner and coordinate relief efforts with local authorities, the American Red Cross and other relief organizations.

Members will continue helping with major cleanup efforts for the next several weeks.
