The annual Christmas tradition has attracted thousands of people for 30 years according to Church service missionaries and memorial directors, Elder David and Sister Karen Fuhriman.
Elder Fuhriman spoke to one visitor, who is not of the Mormon faith, and said this was his eighth visit this season. He said he was having some personal trials and felt such peace when he was at the memorial.
Latter-day Saints from three stakes (similar to a diocese) in Vermont and New Hampshire helped with the month-long event.
The significance of this Church historic site is connected to the birth of Joseph Smith Jr. on December 23, 1805. A 50-foot monument rises up in the Vermont countryside, just a few steps from the original site of the roughly 800-square-foot farmhouse where the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was born. Raised for the 100th anniversary of the prophet’s birth, the monument is a witness to the world of the life and mission of Joseph Smith.
