Plans to construct the temple were announced October 14, 1998, Church leaders broke ground May 8, 1999, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Baton Rouge Louisiana Temple July 16, 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Louisiana and Mississippi.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is Imperial Danby white marble.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
