Plans to construct the temple were announced 16 August 1996, Church leaders broke ground 28 March 1998 and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Billings Montana Temple 20 November 1999. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Montana and Wyoming.

The exterior of the 33,800-square-foot temple is Wyoming white dolomite precast.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
