Plans to construct the temple were announced 7 April 1984, Church leaders broke ground 26 June 1993, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Bogotá Colombia Temple 24 April 1999. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Colombia.

The exterior of the 53,500-square-foot temple is granite, Asa Branca.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
