Plans to construct the temple were announced 11 August 1998, Church leaders broke ground 27 February 1999, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Edmonton Alberta Temple 11 December 1999. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Edmonton, Canada.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is light gray granite quarried in Quebec.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
