Plans to construct the temple were announced 7 May 1998, Church leaders broke ground 20 March 1999 and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Fukuoka Japan Temple 11 June 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in southern Japan.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is Empress White and Majestic Grey granite from China.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
