Plans to construct the temple were announced 31 March 1982, Church leaders broke ground 10 August 1996, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Guayaquil Ecuador Temple 1 August 1999. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Ecuador.

The exterior of the 70,884-square-foot temple is Asa Branca granite.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
