Plans to construct the temple were announced 30 September 1997; Church leaders broke ground 13 June 1998 and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1995-2008), dedicated the Houston Texas Temple 26 August 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Houston and the surrounding area.

The 33,970 square foot temple’s exterior is cast stone and granite.

Currently, there are more than 30 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
