Plans to construct the temple were announced 7 May 1998, Church leaders broke ground 13 March 1999, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Kona Hawaii Temple 23 January 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints on the big island of Hawaii as well as Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

The 10,700-square-foot temple’s exterior is white marble veneer.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
