Plans to construct the temple were announced 6 March 1937, Church leaders broke ground 22 September 1951, and David O. McKay, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1951 to 1970, dedicated the Los Angeles California Temple 11 March 1956. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Southern California.

The 190,614-square-foot temple’s exterior is covered with 146,000 square feet of Mo-Sai stone facing, a mixture of crushed quartz and white Portland cement quarried in Utah and Nevada. Wainscot around exterior is Rockville granite from Minnesota.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
