Plans to construct the temple were announced 2 April 2000, Church leaders broke ground 4 November 2000, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Lubbock Texas Temple 21 April 2002. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in west Texas and eastern New Mexico.

The 16,498-square-foot temple’s exterior is light colored granite.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
