Plans to construct the temple were announced 4 April 1993, Church leaders broke ground 11 June 1996, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Madrid Spain Temple 19 March 1999. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Spain, Portugal, Canary Islands, Cape Verde and France.

The 45,800-square-foot temple’s exterior is Camaro marble from Italy.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
