Plans to construct the temple were announced 30 September 1997, Church leaders broke ground 2 May 1998, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Porto Alegre Brazil Temple 17 December 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in southern Brazil.

The 10,700-square-foot temple’s exterior is cotton white granite from Ceara State of Brazil.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
