Plans to construct the temple were announced 8 July 1998, Church leaders broke ground 20 November 1998, and President Thomas S. Monson, then a counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Tampico Mexico Temple 20 May 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in northeastern Mexico.

The 10,700-square-foot temple’s exterior is Blanco Guardiano white marble.

Currently, there are 30 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
