Plans to construct the temple were announced 30 October 1998, Church leaders broke ground 9 January 1999, and President Thomas S. Monson, then a counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Villahermosa Mexico Temple 21 May 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Tabasco on the east coast before the Yucatan Peninsula.

The 10,700-square-foot temple’s exterior is Blanco Guardiano white marble.

Currently, there are 30 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
