2021 Curriculum to Focus on Study of the Doctrine and Covenants

During 2021, children, youth and adults in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are encouraged to study the Doctrine and Covenants at home. This study will be supported in Primary, Sunday School and Seminary.

The Doctrine and Covenants, a book of scripture detailing early events in the ongoing Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ, mostly comprises selections from the revelations given to Joseph Smith.

“Regardless of where you live or what your circumstances are, the Lord Jesus Christ is your Savior, and God’s prophet Joseph Smith is your prophet,” said President Russell M. Nelson. “He was foreordained before the foundation of the earth to be the prophet of this last dispensation, when ‘nothing shall be withheld’ (Doctrine and Covenants 121:28) from the Saints. Revelation continues to flow from the Lord during this ongoing process of restoration” (“Hear Him,” April 2020 general conference).

Details and the list of materials to be used for classes are provided in the document Instructions for Curriculum 2021, which is available digitally online and in the Gospel Library under “Come, Follow Me.”

The Church has published print and digital versions of new manuals for individuals and families, Sunday School, Primary and Aaronic Priesthood and Young Women.

2021 Curriculum Materials by Class

Individuals and Families (home study)

Families and individuals are encouraged to study the scriptures more at home using the new manual. This home-study manual focuses on the same Doctrine and Covenants scripture passages that you will learn about in your Sunday School classes. By now, each household should have received a print copy of “Come, Follow Me — For Primary: Doctrine and Covenants 2021” from local leaders.

Primary (every Sunday)

All Primary classes will learn from the same “Come, Follow Me — For Primary: Doctrine and Covenants 2021” lesson manual. Nursery classes will continue to use “Behold Your Little Ones: Nursery Manual.” Additional Resources for Teaching Children are helpful for both home and in-class learning. Primary singing time will focus on music that supports the scriptures that children study in their classes.

Sunday School (1st and 3rd Sundays)

The Sunday School manual for adults and youth is “ Come, Follow Me — For Sunday School: Doctrine and Covenants 2021.”

Teachers should use the manual for individuals and families to learn about the scripture accounts and the principles to be taught, then use the Sunday School manual to prepare and organize lessons that support what class members are studying at home, combining and adapting lessons as necessary.

Instruction and class discussion should help class members understand and apply the doctrine in the scriptures. Sunday School classes do not begin with prayer but do conclude with one.

Elders Quorum and Relief Society (2nd and 4th Sundays)

Elders quorum and Relief Society will focus on messages from the most recent general conference. See “Learning from General Conference Messages” at Liahona.ChurchofJesusChrist.org and in Gospel LibraryPrint version are available in the May and November conference issues of the “Liahona.
