The temple was announced 2 April 2000, Church leaders broke ground 23 February 2002, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Aba Nigeria Temple 7 August 2005. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Nigeria and Cameroon.

The exterior of the 11,500-square-foot temple is Namibian pearl granite. Landscaping includes native flowers and palm trees.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
