Every disciple of Jesus Christ has a divinely appointed role in His work. Whether you teach a class, minister to others, or simply strive to follow the Savior’s example, you have countless opportunities to serve and uplift those around you. With easy access to features like a meetinghouse locator and the temple prayer roll, the Member Tools app is designed to support you in these efforts, making it easier to connect with others, fulfill your responsibilities and strengthen your faith — wherever you are.
During the October 2024 general conference, Elder Gary E. Stevenson reminded us of four “divinely appointed responsibilities” for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to exemplify the light of Jesus Christ:
- Living the gospel of Jesus Christ
- Caring for those in need
- Inviting all to receive the gospel
- Uniting families for eternity
“Remarkably,” he said, “each can be done in the most normal and natural ways.”
Since its introduction in 2010, the Member Tools app has evolved from a simple digital directory into a powerful resource that supports both members and leaders in fulfilling these sacred responsibilities. With its continually expanding features, the app makes it easier than ever to connect, serve and minister effectively.
Following are some ways Member Tools can help you in your daily discipleship.
Living the Gospel of Jesus Christ
“First,” Elder Stevenson taught, “live the gospel of Jesus Christ. Study the words of the prophets and learn to love your Father in Heaven. Incline your hearts to Him and strive to walk in His way.”
Find a Meetinghouse
An essential part of living the gospel is attending church, where you can gather with your fellow Saints and participate in the ordinance of the sacrament. Whether you’ve just moved to a new place or you’re visiting somewhere new, the Meetinghouses feature helps you quickly locate a nearby chapel to attend your Sunday meetings, wherever you are in the world. You can also use the feature to help friends find a meeting near them.
Schedule a Temple Appointment
A simple way to build temple worship into your routine is to schedule appointments in advance. The My Temple feature quickly redirects you to ordinance schedules and available appointments, allowing you to find a time slot that works best with your schedule.

Caring for Those in Need
When someone is baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, they make a covenant with God to serve others — to “bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light,” to “mourn with those that mourn” and to “comfort those that stand in need of comfort” (Mosiah 18:8-9).
Elder Stevenson reiterated this commitment: “Let the people you serve know that your concern for them is rooted in your love of God and your desire to treat your neighbor as yourself.”
Ministering Assignment
Ministering can be as simple as a thoughtful text or call, yet it can make a lasting impact. The Ministering Assignment feature allows you to quickly find the people you’re assigned to minister to and access their contact details.
Another thoughtful way to minister is to reach out on their birthday. Use the Directory feature to sort by birthday, then find their name and add the date to your calendar. While specific reports are available only to leaders in certain callings, the birthday feature can be accessed by any member by navigating to the directory, tapping the three dots at the top of the screen and sorting the list by “Birthday.” If members would prefer to have their birthday visible only to their local leaders, they can adjust their visibility settings.
“The birthdays function allows me to reach out to members, showing them we care,” said Oscar A. De Vega, a member of the Church in Hong Kong. “The reports, directory, and missionary functions are also very useful when discussing members’ needs with the Branch Presidency.”
Temple Prayer Roll
Whether or not you are endowed in the temple, if someone you know is struggling with sickness or any other type of affliction, you can add their name to your temple prayer roll anytime, anywhere. Up to five names can be submitted at a time. For the following two weeks, they will be prayed for daily in the house of the Lord.
Kathryn Grover, a member of the Church from Dallas, Texas, USA said, “Recently I found out my friend who was pregnant was hospitalized. Immediately I said a personal prayer for her but knew she could use all the prayers she could get, so I added her name to the prayer roll in a matter of minutes through Member Tools. I was grateful for the 24/7 access to respond to situations and inspiration immediately. My friend had a beautiful healthy girl a couple weeks later.”

Inviting All to Receive the Gospel
Elder Stevenson urged, whether you are a full-time missionary or not, “please realize your immense capacity to influence your peers as you love, share and invite them to explore the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
Introduce Friends to Missionaries
When a friend is interested in meeting with missionaries, you can easily help them connect with elders or sisters in their area using the Introduce Friends to Missionaries feature. With this tool, you can specify language preferences and whether they’d feel more comfortable attending a young adult or family congregation.
Make a Group
While teachers and leaders can easily communicate with their class or organization through a class list function under Organizations, the Groups feature allows anyone to create custom lists for more personal and meaningful connections with those they serve.
For example, Primary teachers can create a group to keep parents informed on activities and assignments. Ward missionaries can organize a group of members willing to provide rides to church for those in need. A young single adult might use the feature to connect with their family home evening group in their local congregation.
After creating a group in the app, you’re just a few taps away from sharing an uplifting message, making an announcement or letting the people in your stewardship know you love them.
Directory
And of course, Member Tools will always be your first stop to finding your directory and reaching out to others. “One of the creative ways I have used the [Member Tools directory],” said Edwin Sanchez, bishop of the Alta Vista Ward in Puerto Cumarebo, Venezuela, “has been to go through name by name and try to contact members I don’t know … who were baptized as children or young people and no longer attended Church activities.”

Uniting Families for Eternity
Elder Stevenson urged, “Become engaged in family history, spend time in the temple, and carefully prepare yourself to be the kind of man or woman ready to marry an equally worthy companion in the temple. Develop a pattern in your life now to make the temple a regular part of your lives.”
Ordinances Ready
Temple worship can be especially meaningful when performing ordinances for your ancestors, and you don’t need to be a family history expert to participate. With the Ordinances Ready feature, you can find family members who are ready for proxy ordinances in less than 10 seconds, as long as you’re also logged in to the Family Tree app and connected to the internet.
Covenant Path Progress
If you are a new member or someone returning to full activity in the Church, the Covenant Path Progress feature provides experiences to help strengthen your faith in Jesus Christ. If you don’t see this feature but would like to use it, please reach out to your bishop.
