Plans to construct the temple were announced 17 March 1999, Church leaders broke ground 29 May 1999 and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Adelaide Australia Temple 15 Jun 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in southern Australia.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is snow white granite and the grounds are landscaped with native vegetation.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
