The temple was announced 4 April 1997, Church leaders broke ground 20 June 1998 and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple 5 March 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in New Mexico and in parts of Arizona and Colorado.

The exterior of the 34,000-square-foot temple is desert rose granite, and the grounds are landscaped with native vegetation.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
