American Red Cross Recognizes Church for Support of Measles Initiative in Africa

American Red Cross President and CEO Marsha J. Evans met with leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 4 February 2005 to accept a $1 million donation on behalf of the Measles Initiative, a partnership to vaccinate 200 million children in Africa saving an estimated 1.2 million lives.

The contribution was the second part of a 3-year commitment from the Church to provide a total of $3 million as a primary supporter of the initiative.

During her visit, Mrs. Evans presented the First Presidency with the organization's highest financial support honor, the American Red Cross Circle of Humanitarians award. She also presented an expression of appreciation, a reprint of a New York Times article about the Measles Initiative, to Bishop H. David Burton, presiding bishop of the Church.
