Plans to construct the temple were announced 4 October 1997, Church leaders broke ground 17 April 1998, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Anchorage Alaska Temple 9 January 1999. After remodeling the temple to enlarge it, President Hinckley rededicated the temple 8 February 2004. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Alaska and Yukon.

The exterior of the 11,937-square-foot temple is granite.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
