Plans to construct the temple were announced 2 April 2000, Church leaders broke ground 3 February 2001, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Asunción Paraguay Temple 19 May 2002.

The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Paraguay and parts of Argentina. The temple is 10,700 square feet, and the exterior is light gray Asa Branca Brazilian granite.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
