The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Berlin held a weeklong exhibit called “Friends Always” to commemorate the beginning of the Berlin airlift 65 years ago.
The exhibit featured Gail S. Halvorsen (the “Candy Bomber”) and the history of the Berlin airlift. Halvorsen, an Air Force pilot and Mormon, dropped handkerchief parachutes of candy from his plane during the Berlin airlift in 1948 and 1949.
On the display's opening day, Bernd von Kostka, curator of the AlliiertenMuseum in Berlin, said Halvorsen's actions had a powerful effect on American-German relations and brought hope to young children in Berlin.
