Plans to construct the temple were announced 29 July 1998, Church leaders broke ground 17 October 1998, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Bismarck North Dakota Temple 19 September 1999. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in North Dakota and South Dakota.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is white marble.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
