Plans to construct the temple were announced 30 September 1995, Church leaders broke ground 13 June 1997, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Boston Massachusetts Temple 1 October 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and New York.

The exterior of the 69,000-square-foot temple is granite.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
