Plans to construct the temple were announced May 28, 1988, Church leaders broke ground May 2, 1992, and Howard W. Hunter, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1994 to 1995, dedicated the Bountiful Utah Temple January 8-14, 1995. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in central and south Davis County.

The exterior of the 104,000-square-foot temple is Bethel white Granite.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
