Plans to construct the temple were announced 20 July 1998, Church leaders broke ground 26 May 2001, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Brisbane Australia Temple 15 June 2003. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Queensland and the northern areas of New South Wales.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is light gray granite.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
