Plans to construct the temple were announced 2 April 1980, Church leaders broke ground 20 April 1983, and President Thomas S. Monson, then a counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Buenos Aires Argentina Temple 17-19 January 1986. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Argentina.

The temple has been renovated and was rededicated 9 September 2012 by President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the First Presidency of the Church.

The exterior of the 17,687-square-foot temple is light gray native granite.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
