Plans to construct the temple were announced 4 October 2008, Church leaders broke ground 15 May 2010 and Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Calgary Alberta Temple Sunday, 28 October 2012. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Calgary and the surrounding communities from Banff in the west to Drumheller in the east.

The exterior of the three-story, 33,000-square-foot temple features gray granite from China.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
