Plans to construct the temple were announced 3 April 1997, Church leaders broke ground 1 May 1998, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Campinas Brazil Temple 17 May 2002. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.
The exterior of the 49,100-square-foot temple is light gray Asa Branca granite from the state of Ceara.
Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
