Church Calls for City to Honor Plaza Agreement

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today called on the mayor and Salt Lake City Council to "link arms" with it in finding an equitable solution to the issues surrounding the Church Plaza on a former section of Main Street.

Bishop H. David Burton, in a letter to the mayor and city council delivered shortly after Mayor Ross C. Anderson's press conference on the issue, said the Church remains committed to working with the city to find a solution that assures public access to the plaza.

In the letter, the Presiding Bishop of the Church says the parties to the sale —; the city and Church —; now have the opposite of what they intended with the original agreement.

Here the Church is publishing the full text of the letter, together with a critique of Mayor Anderson's "time, place and manner" proposals that were the subject of his news conference today. In addition, text reports and video taped examples of disruptive and confrontational behavior on the new Church Plaza over the Thanksgiving holiday are available.
