The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was recognized for its long-time association with and support of Catholic Charities in the Galveston-Houston area of Texas.
Presiding over the meeting was Cardinal DiNardo, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Archbishop of the Houston-Galveston Archdiocese, where he oversees 1.3 million Catholics.

At the organization’s annual meeting in November, representatives of the Church were honored with the 2017 Charity in Action Award. Cynthia Colbert, president and CEO of Catholic Charities in the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese, remarked about the Church’s unwavering support to help many as it always answers Catholic Charities’ urgent calls for volunteers.
Colbert said Latter-day Saint volunteers have hosted school supply drives to ensure that the children served by Catholic Charities are prepared for the school year and have coordinated outings for the children in the St. Michael’s program. “In addition, they have helped seniors move into new homes and assist with sorting various donations at several of our locations, like Mamie George Community Center and the Guadalupe Center. Their volunteers have served hundreds of hours of their time.”
Jan Chappell, Houston area director of Public Affairs, accepted the award on behalf of the Church and expressed gratitude for being able to serve together with Catholic Charities. “What a privilege it is to work with a dedicated group of people who are also committed followers of Jesus Christ.”
Chappell further explained that when the Church partners with community organizations, the intent is to augment their capacity to provide direct relief.
Other Catholic Charities-related entities received the 2017 Charity in Action Award, as well.
