Plans to construct the temple were announced 7 May 1998, Church leaders broke ground 9 January 1999, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Ciudad Juárez Mexico Temple 26 February 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is white marble veneer.

Currently, there are 30 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
