Plans to construct the temple were announced 2 April 2000, Church leaders broke ground 28 October 2000, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Columbia River Washington Temple 18 November 2001. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Washington and Oregon.

The exterior of the 16,880-square-foot temple is Bethel white granite from Vermont and Italy.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
