Plans to construct the temple were announced 17 March 1999, Church leaders broke ground 24 April 1999, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Copenhagen Denmark Temple 23 May 2004. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Aarhus and Copenhagen Denmark; Goteborg and Malmo, Sweden; and Iceland.

The exterior of the 25,000-square-foot temple is original brick and columns.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
